Ford (F) Gearing Up For A Rebound Of Its Own

At a time when investors are looking everywhere for signs of an economic turnaround, Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) is gearing up for a rebound of its own.

The “Big Three” automaker yesterday (Thursday) became the latest U.S. firm to beat Wall Street estimates for the second quarter and said it remains on track to meet or exceed all of its financial and operational targets for the rest of this year. Ford even reaffirmed its outlook for fiscal 2011. The truckload of good news was enough to send the automaker’s shares up 9.25%, to close at $6.97.

“[Ford Chief Executive Officer Alan] Mulally’s largely…

  • The Federal Open Market Committee yesterday (Wednesday) left its benchmark Federal Funds rate at a range of 0% to 0.25%. “Industrial production, housing starts, and employment have continued to decline steeply, as consumers and businesses have cut back spending,” the FOMC said in statement. “Furthermore, global demand appears to be slowing significantly.” The Fed said that it continues to “purchase large quantities of agency debt and mortgage-backed securities,” and…

Hot Stocks: Canadian Ford Dealer Offers Ford Shares to Buyers of Ford Vehicles

If you like the car, will you love the company?

When it comes to Ford Motor Co. (F), a Canadian car dealer bet a month’s sales on that premise.

Rose City Ford dealership owner John Chisholm offered 100 shares of Ford stock to anyone who bought a new or used vehicle from the dealership during the month of November, the Windsor Star newspaper reported. Chisholm, the president and general manager of Rose City, said he got the idea from a General Motors Co. (GM) dealership in Texas that offered GM shares for each vehicle sold. So Chisholm opted to try it in Windsor,…

Buy, Sell or Hold Insight: GM Remains a High Risk Profit Play, Even as it Files its Turnaround Plan Today

With America’s “Big Three” automakers all due to submit turnaround plans to Congress today (Tuesday) – a requirement if General Motor Corp. (GM), Ford Motor Co. (F), and Chrysler Corp., are to receive $25 billion in government loans – I couldn’t help but recall the moment eight years ago when I realized the U.S. auto industry was skidding toward a financial collapse.

I’ve been thinking about that market call of mine a lot of late, particularly after recently reading that JP Morgan Chase & Co. (JPM) credit analysts had rated GM’s distressed debt as a “Buy,” noting that the company was…

The Biggest Problem Detroit’s Big Three are Facing

By Andrew Mickey, Q1 Publishing

“Buy One, Get One Free” – That was the offer last week in the United Kingdom. But the two-for-one sale wasn’t for bags of potato chips or loaves of bread at the supermarket, it was for cars.

U.K. newspaper The Guardian reports car dealers across the country were doing the unthinkable to unload excess inventory. They were selling Dodge Avengers at 2-for-1. The gas-guzzling Avenger, made by Chrysler, has been one of the worst-selling cars in the country where gas will run you $5 a gallon (even with oil at $50 a barrel.)

Dealers were so hard up to…

Stocks open lower as investors refocus on economy

By JOE BEL BRUNO and SARA LEPRO
AP Business Writer

(AP:NEW YORK) Investors digested more downbeat economic news Friday and cashed in some of their gains from the previous session’s big rally. Hints from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke that another interest rate cut might be possible appeared to have little effect on trading.

Some retrenchment was to be expected after such a big advance, in which the Dow Jones industrials rallied more than 550 points. But there was also plenty of discouraging news for investors to focus on, including comments from Bernanke that the markets remain under "severe strain" and a sobering report…

Southwest Feels the Love; Minimum Wage Bump; Qualcomm and Nokia Accord; Fertilizer Firm Reaps Rewards; Unemployment Claims Mount; Ford’s Worst Quarter in History; Dow Unable to Recoup Losses; Gaming Taking Off in Macau

Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) yesterday (Thursday) announced that second-quarter revenue increased 15% due to the advance purchase of fuel contracts, Bloomberg News reported. Second quarter earnings increased to $321 million or 44 cents per share for the Dallas-based air carrier. Even without the boost from fuel hedging, Southwest would have earned $121 million or 16 cents per share, beating analyst expectations.

The national minimum wage in the United States increased yesterday…

Investing in India: Tata takes charge

TATA Motors

Tata Motors (TTM: NYSE) debuted its entry for the cheapest car in the world this week. The Nano, a two-seater that runs for an enviable 54 miles per gallon of gas, will cost Indian customers only INR 1 lakh (100,000 rupees or $2,556).

The car is stripped down to say the least. It doesn’t have airbags or air conditioning, and you can just imagine sitting in Mumbai traffic in the middle of summer without air conditioning. The car doesn’t have a radio or a passenger-side mirror. But it will get drivers where they want to go, even if they arrive sweat-drenched…
