Internet giant Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) increased its Web search market-share last month, while Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) lost share at a hair-raising pace. Bing, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) new service and the third player in the group, also registered gains. Overall, Google’s web search share climbed to 65.4% in October, up from 64.9% in September. Microsoft rose to 9.9% from 9.4%, while Yahoo fell to 18% from 18.8%. Last month saw the fifth consecutive share increase for Microsoft. FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) reported that quarterly earnings fell by 53 percent compared to a year prior. The company said it plans to raise rates by 5.9 percent for U.S. domestic and export shipping beginning Jan. 4. Although fuel prices might offset some of the increase, the higher prices are sure to aggravate individuals and businesses of all sizes that rely on FedEx to send and receive goods around the world. Market Updates: Exxon Mobil (XOM), Citigroup (C), US Airways (LCC), Oracle (ORCL)

Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C) says shareholders have approved the final arrangements that will result in the U.S. government owning 7.69 billion Citi common shares, or 33.6% of the bank’s outstanding shares. US Airways (NYSE: LCC) stated that August traffic fell 3.9% while capacity decreased 3.8% compared with the same month a year prior. Load factor, or the percentage of the plane filled with passengers, remained stable at 85.7%, according to Marketwatch.

Will Exxon Mobil (XOM) Reap Biofuel Rewards with Pond Scum?

Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) will dip its toes into the renewable energy pond – with a focus on the scum that resides in it.

The oil giant is looking to spend more than $600 million on the research and development (R&D) of next generation biofuels from photosynthetic algae in an alliance with privately held Synthetic Genomics Inc (SGI), which was founded by genome map pioneer J. Craig Venter.
