The 54% Dividend Capture

There’s a simple way to earn a 54% annual yield from Google. I’m going to show you exactly how to do it in a minute. But first let me explain why you haven’t heard of this before…

The options market is the most "high-octane" market on the planet. That’s because option contracts are like medical insurance. Most of the time, you’re healthy. The premiums you pay disappear into a black hole and the insurance company wins. Once a decade, you have a major surgery and the insurance company makes you a huge payout.

There’s no middle ground. You either make a…

The Patient is Etherized: Consume the Preferred Organ

You know something’s up when the market keeps rising in the face of pitiful economic and corporate earnings news.  That’s precisely what happened last week when consumer confidence was smashed, GDP shrunk and yet the Dow charged ahead nearly 15%.

Some might call it a bull market.  Others would say that was heresy: “What, with the dollar on its way to becoming worthless?  How dare you speak of a bull market!”

And yet that’s exactly what it is.

On the 10th of October, when the Dow Industrials fell briefly below the 8000 level and the panic was general, 93% of all stocks…

Beware The Dividend Trap: Here’s The Most Important Number You Should Consider

On July 7, 2008, the S&P 500 crossed the threshold into bear market territory, having slid 20% from its high on October 9, 2007.

Today the S&P is trading at 935 – a 40% drop from its high of 1,565.15. If you take the 14 bear markets since the Great Depression, the average decline was 38%. At the low on October 28, the decline was 45.5%.

So are we at the bottom? Perhaps. But consider this…

The average duration of these bear markets was 18.4 months. Given that we’re in the 13th month now, that puts us relatively close to the end, right?

Not…

Bank of America Shares Plunge on Earnings Shortfall, Major Dividend Cut

Shares of Bank of American Corp. (BAC) fell more than 26% during trading yesterday (Tuesday) as investors reacted to the company’s disclosure that it was cutting its dividend after its third-quarter earnings plunged a stunning 68%.

The Charlotte-based BofA also said it will cut its dividend in half – to 32 cents a share – and will sell as much as $10 billion in common stock to beef up its balance sheet.

The dividend cut underscores the crisis-like capital situation in the U.S. banking sector, especially since Bank of America executives had repeatedly told Wall Street that the bank would not cut…

High Yields Raise Red Flags for Bank Stocks

Fifth Third Bancorp (FITB) just became the latest in a string of hard-hit financial firms to slash its dividend to preserve much-needed cash.

Yesterday (Wednesday),the Ohio-based regional bank slashed its dividend to 15 cents down from 44 cents, becoming the 17th company to reduce or eliminate its dividend completely this year, Bloomberg News reported.

Fifth Third certainly wasn’t the first bank to have to resort to this unpopular measure, nor will it be the last.

Financial firms of every stripe have taken a beating from the subprime mortgage crisis that has accounted for $396 billion in write-downs so far. From national consumer banks such…

Energy Utilities: Buy Exelon Corp. (EXC:NYSE)

Here’s a news story I bet you haven’t heard. It’s created a nearly catastrophic economic environment in one of our nation’s state capitals, but few folks are talking about it. Maybe it is because they are scared to raise the subject.

Just a few weeks ago, an avalanche took out Juneau, Alaska’s power supply. Nearly two miles of high-power transmission lines from a nearby hydroelectric plant were destroyed. It will take more than three months to fix the problem. Meanwhile, the entire city (including all the government offices, mind you) is forced to get its energy from a handful of huge…

A High Dividend Utility Stock: TRP

In these uncertain times, it’s important to balance your portfolio with a good mix of high yielding stocks. I will avoid touching upon REITs and Financial stocks for the time being because I’m unsure as to whether the worst is over. I’m the kind of guy who’s not interested in pharmaceutical plays, such as Pfizer (PFE), since I highly doubt its 6.4% yield. Looks unsustainable to me, especially when you consider the fact that it has a payout ratio over 100%.

Then, I turned to the utility sector and found TransCanada (TRP). And let me tell you — it’s an attractive…

Momentum Stock: Permian Basin Royalt Trust (PBT)

The talking heads have been touting the recession word for a while. In an effort to cut off slower economic growth, the Fed has been a bit quick to lower interest for a cheap market thrill, which in my mind can only delay the inevitable market panic.

Now that the public and investors alike have been well groomed for this doomsday scenario, everyone wants to know when this so called recession will occur. Could it happen this year or perhaps in 2009? No one really knows for sure, but the mood across the country and overseas is pretty grim.

If…
