By Martin Hutchinson
Money Morning
The market’s verdict on the $700 billion bailout was pretty clear: Stock prices started dropping the moment the bill was passed on Friday afternoon and continued to do so Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average closing down 370 points for the day – after being down 800 points earlier that same day.
The economic effect is also pretty clear: Given that the bailout plan is being launched at a point when money is already tight – and that it pours $700 billion of our money into the most useless, toxic waste left over from the housing bubble –…

Electing Our Next Energy System
In the world of energy and scarcity, the name of the next president will matter to us quite a bit. “People are policy,†as Ronald Reagan used to say.
But then again, a lot of energy and scarcity facts defy party labels. The energy resources are out there.
They are what they are and where they are. We can exploit the resources or not. But it’s not like in Star Trek. There’s no “dilithium†power source out there to keep the economy running.
So for the next president and his administration, it’s a question of doing something. The U.S.…

With contests in both Indiana and North Carolina, today (Tuesday) probably marks the last of the crucial Democratic presidential primary election contests between senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.
Unless the cynical premise of Rush Limbaugh’s “Operation Chaos” is realized, and the Democrat presidential wingding continues to move forward at an increasingly vitriolic level through that party’s national convention in Denver in late August, whomever wins the Democratic nomination is pretty likely to be our next President. So, as investors – whether Democrat or Republican – which of the two candidates should we be rooting for?
The Case for Clinton
Our initial reaction would…

Obama vs. McCain
I realize it’s a bit early to do any kind of election predictions, but for all you political junkies out there, here’s the current score. If the presidential election were held today and it was Obama (D) up against McCain (R), the Democrat would come out on top winning 46% vs. 43% nationally.
According to a Rasmussen polling report, the Democrats would pick up Iowa, New Mexico, and Ohio (debatable). This would give them 284 electoral votes against 216 for the GOP.

This time around, Colorado, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia all represent toss-up states that are up for…

Is Obama’s South Carolina Victory Enough?
Following Barack Obama’s landslide victory in the South Carolina primary last Saturday, it would appear to the average person that he has a fighting shot at the title bout with whomever the Republicans nominate for president in ’08.
However, it is important to note that Hillary Clinton’s support and established connections on a national scale still provide her with a favorable advantage from this point forward. No longer will the ground game be effective on the scale seen in Iowa and New Hampshire. Candidates will now have to rely on massive amounts of money and…
