ZEITGEIST: In Search of Truth

Zeiting the Geist
The latest bit of guerrilla media to take the online universe by storm is “Zeitgeist, the Movie.” Clocking in at close to two hours’ length, and with over a million views on Google Video since its June 26th “official” release, Zeitgeist is a grabby, cranky, can’t-stop-watching-it documentary that purports to tell the real truth about Christianity, 9/11, and the International Bankers.

Exactly who is behind the video is unclear, although someone with the moniker of “Peter J.” has posted an online letter claiming credit and explaining Zeitgeist’s message to those who may have somehow failed to grasp…

Investing in Biotechnology: One Market Is Always a Bull Market

Biotech

It’s getting tougher and tougher to find safety. The tech sector is getting hit. Formerly high flying overseas are giving back some of their handsome gains. Even with oil prices hitting $100 a barrel again yesterday, the entire oil sector is off about 10% for the year.

The bears have had their way. And, frankly, there aren’t too many drivers out there to help get things turned around. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t opportunities; they’re just getting tougher to find.

But as all of us have learned the hard way, if you’re not looking in the right place it can be…

Turnaround Year for E*Trade?

e*trade

After a steep dive from $25 to $2 and change, insiders are betting big that 2008 will the E*Trade Financial’s (ETFC:NASDAQ) turnaround year. Since January 30, 2008, ten insiders bought 461,649 shares between $3.99 and $4.06 on January 30, 2008.

But what’s most impressive is that they bought after a one-month triple digit move on the stock off $2 lows. That alone speaks volumes on confidence, which may explain last Thursday’s call option volume on February 4 and 5 calls, as well as March 5 and 6 calls.

Sure, the stock took a major dive in 2007, but that’s because it got…

Warren Buffet to the Rescue

You have to admire Warren Buffett.

He’s offered to relieve the ailing monoline bond insurers of their very best assets, leaving them with all the subprime rubbish that got them into trouble in the first place. It’s a viciously cut-throat offer to a group of crippled opponents, kicking them when they’re down and defenceless.

He cheerfully admits that this is capitalism, red in tooth and claw, at its finest. “I’m not doing this so that St. Peter will let me in at the pearly gates. We are doing this to make money,” he said.

And still the market applauds him as a hero – “Buffett…

Options Trading: How to leverage market volatility into profits

When trading options, the key to winning speculation is to risk as little money as possible to make the biggest return. And that perfectly describes the opportunity I’ll be presenting you today.

For starters, let’s look at the stock movements of some of the top mortgage lenders. On July 10th 2007, Fannie Mae (FNM – NYSE) closed at $66.49. Today it trades for $34.34, good for a 50% loss.

Also on July 10th 2007, Countrywide Financial (CFC – NYSE) closed at $37.34. A week ago, it traded for $5.01, marking an 87% loss.

In short, two of the biggest mortgage lenders…

Big Oil’s Secret Impoverishment

The headlines seem to be rolling in nonstop for Big Oil: “Chevron Posts Record $17 Billion Profit. BP Profit Up 52%, Record $4.4 Billion Quarter.” And the giant among giants, “Exxon Mobil Reported All-Time Record $39.5 Billion Profit.”

We’ve all seen these headlines before and, sad to say, many investors bought into the hype. Both Chevron and Exxon Mobil shares have climbed more than 150% in the past five years. BP, despite constant problems with its pipelines and international operations, has scored a 50% gain in the past five years.

On the surface, it seems like a pretty safe bet, right? Big…

The Recession Answer: Trickle down or trickle up

After more than eighteen months of doomsday predictions, the nation is just now getting around to planning for a recession. Some say it is too late. Others believe there are still hopes of eliminating a debilitating downward spiral.

On Thursday, our nation’s elected officials conducted a conference call and gathered around a virtual table to discuss the options. When it comes to keeping a multi-trillion dollar economy out of the hopper, the choices are often painful and limited.

Fed Chief Bernanke wants immediate relief. He wants cash in the hands of American consumers fast. An economy filled with cash-heavy consumers is…

Daily Reckoning’s Bill Bonner: Demise of the Dollar and the New Economic Superpowers

Bill Bonner

Baltimore (TFN): The following was taken from Agora Inc. founder Bill Bonner’s appearance on TFN Smart Investing with Krista Das filmed on December 17, 2007. ( Watch the Market Forecast 2008 video.)

Krista Das: Over the past five years, the value of the U.S. dollar has declined dramatically against currencies like the euro, the British pound and the Canadian dollar. Analysts and commentators have blamed the U.S. twin deficits for the decline, as well as record levels of public and private debt in the United States.

While some like to look at current conversion rates in the context of decennial economic cycles, an…
