Company Update: Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) – Samsung acquires fingerprint sensor firm as competitors warm to biometrics

[at The Verge] – Samsung is acquiring biometrics firm Fingerprint Cards for $650 million in cash. The deal will provide Samsung with access to a number of fingerprint products that Fingerprint Cards produces, including swipe and area sensors. Fingerprint Cards’ sensors have been used in keyboards, door locks, and even vehicles worldwide, but the firm notes “the technology can be implemented in volume products such as smart cards and mobile phones.”The most obvious use for fingerprint technology right now is in smartphones, especially after Apple introduced its iPhone 5S with a Touch ID fingerprint scanner. …

Apple Inc. (AAPL), currently valued at $442.52B, began trading this morning at $486.99.

Looking at the equity, the company’s one day range is $485.17 to $488.69 and has traded between $385.10 and $652.79 over the past year.

AAPL shares are currently priced at 12.45x this year’s forecasted earnings, which makes them relatively inexpensive compared to the industry’s 18.98x earnings multiple for the same period.
