GETTING IT DONE WITH BALLS OF STEEL…WALL STREET’S BAD BOY
Daniel Loeb, quite possibly a legend in the making with his cut throat attitude, brilliant mind and relentless work ethic makes him the “Bad Boy” of Wall Street. Ridiculed by many, Loeb continues to get it done — making his Hedge Fund one of the best in the world; ranked 15th by Barrons.
The firm, named Third Point LLC ,began back in 1995 with only $3.3MM and has today grown to $5.5 Billion. The firm returns a remarkable 28.9% annually, which is monstrous compared to other hedge funds in the market, only returning around 12%. Since its inception 12 years ago, the hedge fund has only had one down year which was in 02’ — loosing 7%. Despite that, Loeb has has unparallel success that can’t be replicated by many.
Loeb has come to be known around the world for his aggressive demeanor toward managers that are underperforming in his portfolio. Loeb will not hesitate to email a CEO and let him or her know how he feels about them pulling down shareholder value and above all, affecting his portfolio. He demands companies to perform at a high level and his expertise in the financial markets have surely brought him great wealth.
One of his many positions held coming up in the financial world was in Los Angeles where he would head into the office by 2 a.m., calling Europe to sell Certificates of Benificial Interest (CBI), which designate nonvoting securities with underlying assets of one corporation as debt securities of another company.
Daniel truly has the mindset of Gordon Gekko, the main character in the movie Wall Street with a famous quote “Money never sleeps pal.” Well it is evident Mr. Loeb never sleeps and has always chased the almighty dollar. Don’t expect him to stop anytime soon as he will continue to grow and be one of the best in the business for years and years to come.
Here are some examples below of quotes taken from emails sent from Daniel Loeb to various CEO’s.
“Do what you do best, retreat to your waterfront mansion in the Hamptons”
-Daniel to CEO of Star Gas
“Since you ascended to your current role of Chief Value Destroyer, the shares have dropped over 45%”
-Daniel to CEO of Potlatch
“It was my conclusion that the company’s board is governed by a toothless crew of cronies”
-Daniel to CEO of Salton Inc.
