Constitutional right or worry?
The other night on Hannity and Colmes there was a discussion about a preacher in Texas who has been speaking out against the religions of the west in favor of radical Islam. Now, this may not be the whole story since I happen to tune into the show rather late, but what did catch my attention was the debate that followed.
A pastor of a Christian church came on and said that this man should be stopped dead in his tracks because his message is threatening to our society and culture. His argument was that since roughly 85% of the United States population is Christian, their views should be made into law condemning people speaking out of hate since their voice is that of a majority.
At least Colmes came in and made a point in defense of keeping religion out of government. He said that it is not the role of government to decide which religion to favor, promote laws in support of any religion, and prosecute those with an opposing view to the beliefs of others. His argument could be summed up in the right of everyone to his or her constitutional right to free speech.
Just because someone promotes terrorism or a radical belief does not mean they have committed a crime. Does that mean that they should be monitored in some way, probably. The appropriate actions to be taken are another issue for the people to decide. My argument stems primarily for the right to free speech, as long as those rights do not inflict harm in any way towards the right of others.
