Americans Protest War Escalation in Washington D.C.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Protesters energized by fresh congressional skepticism about the Iraq war demanded a withdrawal of U.S. troops in a demonstration Saturday that drew tens of thousands back to the streets. (Source: CNN)

Before jumping into today’s war protest I should first tell you that I am currently celebrating six years with my significant other and thought this time around why not venture out to see our nation’s capital. Our plan was to visit a few museums and explore sections of Washington we had not previously seen before. Reservations were made to stay at a trendy hotel called Rouge, a top notch place to crash and have a few cocktails. It’s an exciting mix of Wall Street meets Disco 2000.

Staying on point, we eventually ventured out to our destinations only to witness a massive flood of people on the metro and on the streets, all migrating towards the Capital Building. What was supposed to be a romantic weekend turned into a spontaneous adventure into the unknown.

I soon found myself following crowds of demonstrators who were carrying signs and speaking out against the president and his war that has dragged our nation’s money, innocence, and service men and women into a black hole. On the way, I had the opportunity to chat with a few people along the way who seemed very cordial and receptive.

George Bush Protesters

Although they were initially a bit skeptical of my intentions, one group of ladies allowed me to take their picture. They asked me what organization I represented, so I told them that I wrote for a liberal blog.

Broke the ice quite well…

Next, I came across a slew of police cars and officers conducting their usual blockading of streets and maintaining orderly conduct. Eventually, I made it close to the front lawn and stage where guest speakers were rallying the protesters but was unable to get a clear video shot with my digital camera.

Walking away from the event I realized just how important my right to vote truly was. I often heard shouts of “Put your money where your mouth is and do something about the situation in Iraq.” Well, personally I am not at the breaking point, but am disgusted enough with this administration to exercise my ability to call for change at the polls.

Iraq Troop Increase

The thing I admired most about the people was their courage to stand tall in the face of adversity and voice their beliefs. If we stay quiet and take basic freedoms for granted, then we do not deserve them nor have the right to complain about their suppression.
