2006 Elections: The Year of the Democrat

America has spoken…we want change! I can see the headlines now:

Blue America has crossed the Potomac into the Old Confederacy

On Tuesday night we saw first hand how strong the Democratic wave was. I remember claims by many political pundits who said that the Democratic Party was on its way to becoming obsolete. What ever happened to Newt Gingrich’s sustained Republican Revolution? This was truly a refreshing ray of hope for Democrats who have played the humble role for far too long. Last night proved something:

1. People decide elections not Karl Rove
2. Redistricting will not save you from policy not aligned with American interest
3. George Bush and the Republican Machine have a false sense on invulnerability

Historically speaking, when one party over plays its hand, the American public will lash out and turn the tables of power. This is by no means a green light for Democrats to take revenge. If they are to remain in control of Congress they must be willing to put partisan politics aside and focus on real issues and solutions.

In the key state of Virginia George Allen was considered to be a viable candidate for a presidential run in 2008. That was until Democratic challenger Jim Webb came into the picture. With the final tally yet to be decided, my feeling is that Webb has the votes needed to win the state and help his party tip the balance of control in the Senate.

The signs are now evident that Virginia is turning blue. Northern Virginia near Washington D.C. is Democratic territory and it will be interesting to see if the streak of Democratic victories can continue into ‘08 and beyond.

Virginia Votes: Webb (D) 1,170,564 vs. Allen (R) 1,162,717

The Senate seat in Montana is still too close to call yet, but the Democratic challenger Jon Tester has just shy of a 2,000 vote lead.

Montana Votes: Tester (D) 190,486 vs. Burns 188,900 votes

On a side note I have to tip my hat to Harold Ford Jr. who ran an admirable race and conceded victory to his Republican opponent Bob Corker. Ford remained professionally classy to the very end and proved that he has some unfinished business in regards to his young political future.
