2006: U.S. Senate Race Update

In recent polling, some U.S. Senate races are getting tighter with only five days until the November 7th elections:

Montana: Tester (D) +1, 47-46
Missouri: McCaskill (D) +3, 46-43
Virginia: Webb (D) +1, 45-44
Pennsylvania: Casey (D) +8, 48-40

Races in which there has been a noticeable gap in recent polling are seen below:

Tennessee: Corker (R) +10, 53-43
New Jersey: Menedez (D) +12, 49-37

In my opinion, Pennsylvania is a lost cause for Republicans as incumbent Rick Santorum is likely on his way out of the Senate. The one bright light for the R-party can be seen in the Corker vs. Ford Jr. race in Tennessee. According to recent polls, Corker has taken a stronger lead just days before the election. This race has been well run by challenger Harold Ford Jr., but this race shows just how hard it is for a minority to break through the typical stereotypes against blacks in the South. Although it might be too soon for Ford to run a winning state-wide campaign in Tennessee, he has drawn Republican money into a state that was originally thought to be a landslide victory for the Republicans. The more money Republicans spend defending their home turf, the easier it will become for Democrats to dominate the North and establish a foothold in the West.
