The Confederate Flag: A Southern Discomfort?

The confederate, or rebel flag has been a symbol of controversy since the American Civil War, which lasted from 1861-1865. In you live in the South, or perhaps further north into the Maryland area, you might notice these flags flying high. This is a symbol tied to that of the typical Southern man who argues that “The South Will Rise Again.” I am most reminded of the show “Dukes of Hazard” where the flag rested on top the speedster car General Lee.

Even on my way to work, I see this southern symbol hanging outside someone’s home. Although I respect the right of someone to state their opinions and beliefs, there is an underlying discomfort. I think if you were to ask a Southerner what this symbolic flag means to them they would that that is represents the following:

•Heritage
•Individuality
•Pride
•Southern Roots & States’ Rights

As a Northerner, I would personally say that it represents:

•Hate
•Conflict
•Slavery & Oppression of African Americans
•Non-patriotism – I only salute the flag of the United States of America
•Treason – These southern states wanted to cecede from the union and the North fought to abolish slavery, hence keeping our United States together

Now, the one question we have to ask ourselves as a nation what this symbol truly stands for and does it represent our morals and values.

In my own personal experiences in talking with southern folk, I can not believe how often I hear racist comments and jokes in regards to the African American community and Liberals as well. These are the people who tend to vote Republican and preach to the world about morals and values. This is irony on so many levels.

Here’s a statement from a someone who posted on the Progressive U. Rebel Pride states:

“…most people don’t even know the history of the flag because the world wants everybody politically correct. I know one thing for a fact a lot of people from the North are irrognant and rude. Southern people have manners and respect one another.”

In response to this statement, I would say that people will believe what they will. However, the southern response to states’ rights during the civil war period did lead to a conflict which caused massive bloodshed and a fight from southerners to continue the practice of slavery. Also, I believe southern respect and manners come in part with a more laid back culture. Although this may be the welcoming face of the South, a white male Republican southerner said to me that he believes it is mostly a cover-up and that southerners are more likely to talk behind the backs of others. His opinion of the the north was one of people who told you just how they feel with no sugar coating bullshit attached. Now this is just the opinion of one individual, but there may be some level of truth here.

Let’s iron this issue out right here! What are your thoughts, opinions, and experiences on this matter?

  1. Hi Scooter – finally made it over here! The last paragraph you wrote – many of my African-American friends originated in the South and have migrated North. Every one of those people says exactly what you have said – the welcoming face of the South will stab you when your back is turned. While Northerners can be ugly and hate-filled – it is OPEN. And most would prefer to SEE where the hate is coming from and be able to avoid it – as opposed to having to guess.
This seems rather sad to me – what a choice to have to make. Either way, you are hated – in one place its open, in another – its hidden. But the end result is the same.
I agree with you wholeheartedly on the flag issue – there can be only one! (Haven’t we heard that line somewhere before? ). The rest are simply decorations or historical artifacts.
    And that is my $.02

  2. Dragon Lady,

Thank you for your comment. Strange huh…the makeup of this country is so different, yet the same in many respects. The demographics are certainly shifting down there. Many up here want to get out of the cold and into the booming markets of the South and West U.S. Are you still living down south? Just curious.

Looking forward to more of your thoughts,
    Scooter
