The Joke is not on the Daily Show
From time to time I often hear the sly, cruel, and elitist remarks from the Republican bench regarding the “Daily Show” with Jon Stewart. They claim that the comedy show has no merit, has too much fun with politics and politicians, and draws an irrelevent base for an audience. However, this kind of criticism is something I should come to expect from the other side.
My friend, who is an avid Republican and in his late 30s, took my advice and decided to watch the show for the first time. He absolutely loved it and saw the comedy for what it was. Now there is an obvious political bias here, but the point I am trying to make is that comedy is the name of the game. The purpose of this show is to report political news in a way that is funny and appealing. Of course, many Republicans can not take a joke. There is no room for humor, quick everyone back to your bibles! Now of course I say these things with humor.
What many on the right do not realize is that in addition to being a comedy themed show, the Daily Show pulls the viewer into politics in a way that is not a turn off. It reminds me of playing hockey when I grew up. I got an excellent workout every time I played and practiced the game, but I did not realize it because I was having too much fun. This is what Jon Stewart does for politics. If anything, he should be congratulated on his ability to lift American spirits and interest when it comes to politics. He morphs it in a way that is fun and engaging. After the show is over you might ask yourself how it is that you sat through a political based show. It is all part of Jon’s magic.
Now it is the Daily Show and Stewart who are beginning to see recognition for their efforts through various awards. Maybe the Republicans should worry more about why the joke is always on them. Â
