Jury’s Not Out on Stem Cell Research
Well, it looks as though President Bush slapped his first use of a veto on a measure to allow federally funded stem cell research which would utilize embryos left behind from in vitro fertilization.
Just to give you an idea on how far against the grain he went, the Senate recently passed the bill by a margin of 63 to 37. Click here to view studies conducted in 2001 and 2004 which show the overwhelming support for stem cell research and related activities. Public favorability of this research has only grown with 73% of respondents approving and only 11% disapproving.
This should send a very clear message to the president that the issue has already been decided. Who is he to dismiss 60% of his own party that supports stem cell research? What I found to be surprising was that even born-again Christians are in support by 58% of the vote. Clearly, Mr. Bush plans on pushing the drawn line where it should not be. I guess he does think in mysterious ways. Way to go on your first veto Mr. President, now stick your head back in the sand.
