Opinions to Laws
What is with all the odd legislation trying to be pushed through Congress. Lately we have seen:
- one hundred dollars for gas
- no burning of the flag
- too much violence in video games
- English as the official language of the United States
Now there is a part of me that appreciates these ideas, but I think there are issues that might just be a little more important than the ones I have just listed. Let’s take a look at the flag burning issue. Although it breaks my heart to see any desecration to my flag, I have to respect people’s freedom express their opinion. Yes, we have the freedom to make our own judgments and opinions as long as they do not interfere with the safety of others. I have a problem when our government tries to pass such meaningless legislation. Opinions should never be made into laws.
Some people agree that there is too much violence in video games, and some do not. There is only one thing that I ask for those who are against the so called violence in video games. This is to not to use their opinion to pass laws that prohibit my freedoms to play such games. I do not ask that my personal taste be enforced against anyone and I expect the same treatment in return. If one finds such products to be unacceptable, then do not purchase those games and be more active in discussing those concerns with your children. Let them know you do not approve of such behavior, especially if it emulates that of certain video games. My parents were very blunt about what was right and wrong and let me know when I had let them down.
The other two legislative proposals were mute and probably a waste of tax payer money. Better luck to the Congress of ‘07!
